Uttar Pradesh Approves ₹104.28 Crore Cyber Security Centre to Protect Government Digital Infrastructure
Uttar Pradesh has approved a ₹104.28 crore Cyber Security Operations Centre to protect government networks and citizen services. IIT Kanpur's C3iHub will establish and operate the facility, deploying AI-based monitoring and threat detection.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The responsibility for establishing, operating and maintaining the Uttar Pradesh Cyber Security Operations Centre has been entrusted to the Cyber Security Innovation Hub (C3iHub) of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.
The centre will provide round-the-clock monitoring of digital networks, application systems, data repositories and critical information infrastructure across all government departments in the state. Its primary objective is to identify cyberattacks and suspicious activities at an early stage, assess potential threats and ensure immediate action in the event of a security breach.
The monitoring framework will cover information technology systems as well as industrial and operational technology infrastructure.
The Cyber Security Operations Centre will deploy artificial intelligence and machine learning-based technologies to detect unusual network activity and identify potential cyber threats. Automated systems will also be developed to analyse security incidents and facilitate immediate responses.
The initiative will include regular assessments of information security arrangements across government departments. Security vulnerabilities will be evaluated, while cyber security exercises and simulated attacks will be conducted periodically in coordination with Chief Information Security Officers to assess preparedness against potential threats.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the security of the state's digital infrastructure and safeguarding government systems that support essential services and handle sensitive information.
C3iHub Has Established Security Centres for National Institutions
IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal described the decision as an important step towards securing the state's digital infrastructure.
He said any lapse in cyber security could disrupt essential services provided to citizens and put the security of sensitive data at risk.
Security Systems Already Established for These Institutions
Prof. Agrawal said IIT Kanpur's C3iHub had previously established Cyber Security Operations Centres for several major national institutions, including the Bhilai Steel Plant of the Steel Authority of India Limited, the National Highways Authority of India and the Indian Ports Association.
The experience gained from working with these institutions, along with the technical expertise developed by C3iHub, will now be used to strengthen the security of Uttar Pradesh's government digital infrastructure.
With round-the-clock monitoring, automated threat detection and regular security assessments, the newly approved centre will serve as a key mechanism for protecting government networks, digital applications and critical information systems across Uttar Pradesh.
